Q: How can I increase the horsepower of my 1995 Lexus Sc400?
I have a 95 Lexus Sc400, and I'm looking for anyway I can to increase its horsepower.

A: Hello to a fellow SC400 owner! The thing with the SC400 is that there is very little aftermarket support for it. The first aftermarket exhaust just came out about a month or so ago from Tanabe! And the car has been discontinued since 2000!! You can do the BFI Mod: http://www.planetsoarer.com/BFI3/bfi3.htm It has been proven to be better than any aftermarket setup. The SC400 community favors the BFI, plus, its cheap. You can upgrade the torque converter to either the Lextreme unit, which is a rebuilt stock converter with a higher stall, or the Precision Industries Dragon torque converter, which is more expensive but probably better. This doesn't exactly increase horsepower, but it puts what horsepower you have down to the ground better and therefore makes the car faster. There are NO bolt-on supercharger or turbo kits for our engine... so that guy who said something about a TRD kit is mistaken. Some people have done custom jobs, but those can't be too cheap and I haven't looked into them. If you haven't done a full tuneup yet, you might want to look into that. You can replace the spark plugs and wires, and the distributor caps and rotors. If those are going bad, you'll lose some power. You can find much more information on anything related to the SC at clublexus.com Its a great forum and everything I know about the SC was learned from reading what other people said there.

Q: lexus sc400?
my radio is starting to malfunction, the tape, cd, and radio is on but no sound is coming through. then all of a sudden its normal then 10 seconds later it shuts off, im wondering if the wiring is loose because yesterday it was completely fine. any ideas?

A: it could be a number of things, if all speakers go on and off, then you know its not the speakers or thier wiring, and it is likely the deck or wiring to the deck.

Q: My Lexus Sc400 stalls sometimes when i first start it, it starts up then dies, what is the prob?
I keep hearing its the fuel pump ecu. Also it only does this when it is hot outside, and rarely ever does it at night, does anyone know whats up?

A: A couple of other things to check on these engines (I have a variation of it in a Toyota): 1) check/replace your fuel cap. A friend's had a similar problem because of a bad seal. 2) Remove the airbox and check the throttle body valve. Carbon builds up there as a ring around the valve, interfering with mixture at idle/low rpms. It seems this condition should throw a CEL code (check engine light). Are you getting one of those?

Q: How many miles can you get out of a1995 Lexus SC400 Coupe, and how much do repairs usually cost?
Im thinking of buying this car but it already has 145,000 miles on i love the make and model though. Yeah but I dont wanna buy it and then immediately have to put more money into it than its worth. I absolutely love the car I just get worried about the mileage.

A: This car will last you atleast 300K miles if you maintain oil/trans fluid changes. The car is built in Japan and was also designed during Toyota/Lexus highest quality point. I would buy this.

Q: I have a 93 Lexus SC400 that engine won't start sometime. How do you know if your CRANKSHAFT SENSOR is bad?
After turning the engine for a while it would crank up and drive with no problems. I can even turn her off and start her back up(after I get home). This has happen a few time to me. Where can i locate this sensor?

A: Sensor is on bottom frt of motor by the crankshaft, problem is that on this year of motor maybe of the back side of lower pulley or behide timing belt cover.

Q: Why the ac in a '92 lexus SC400 won't work?
I have already changed the compressor and expansion valve. Went to several mechanics and they say there is restrictions in the lines. I don't have $300 to spend on them, what is a better way.

A: Most common issue with the a/c in the SC's is the line under the radiator. They will corrode under the bracket and leak. On mine I took off the bracket and installed a compression fitting found at a auto parts store and recharged the system cheap fix. Also the evaporators will leak but much cheaper to just charge the system every year.

Q: can a 90 somethin lexus sc400 engine fit in a 88 corolla?
in an import magizine i saw an article where they did drop a lexus engine into an 88 corolla with only a few complications.

A: I saw a solid fuel rocket on the top and the back end of a 69 Impala. Of course you can, even a 455 if you want. Anything is possible. Anyway, why wasting your time on a Corolla when you can use another model that might work better? Is not always about if it fits, is also about weight. The suspension has to be reinforced too, what about the body? Can it handle the torque? Is more than just slapping a motor, duct tape and call it done. As a show car, sure why not, as a practical go around car, I do not think girls will appreciate to ride on a Corolla... Good luck ! :-)

Q: How to take out head unit 91 Toyota Soarer / Lexus SC400?
Hi, I am attempting to remove the Headunit cage and all from my new soarer, but I can't seem to work out how to do it. Any Instructions?

A: There's a very clear picture guide on how to remove the centre console and head unit of a Toyota Soarer Twin Turbo at Soarer World: http://www.soarerworld.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6758 It would be the same process on the V8 model. There's lots more in their FAQs section here under 'EMV' : http://www.soarerworld.com/forum/showpost.php?p=137914&postcount=12

Q: How many 02 sensors do I need for a lexus sc400?
When I went to the auto parts store, they say I only need 2.However with a dual exaust system, would I need four?As per scematics, they mention something about(Bank 1 sensor2, and a bank 2 sensor 2) Am I only getting half of the story??

A: You have 4 o2 sensors, one before the catalytic on each one and one each after. They maybe saying that just need the one after the catalytic from each side. "Bank 1 Sensor 1" is before the cat. and "Bank 1 Sensor 2" is after the cat.

Q: Does anyone know where I can find an aftermarket stereo kit for a Lexus SC400?
I am looking to upgrade the factory radio in my car and cannot find an aftermarket kit.

Q: my 1992 lexus sc400 has 215,000 and runs very strong. How long can I expect my engine to keep running like new

A: As long as you maintain it properly almost forever. My grandfather had a 1956 IH pickup he bought it new and owned it untill the day he died in 2003. original engine with 760,000 miles on it and it still ran like the day he bought it. He maintained it religiously.

Q: Lexus sc400 starter location?
I have a 1992 Lexus sc400. I need to find the Starter so i can just bang on because i believe it is stuck. Please help.. Now is there a way a can get to it without having a 6 hour job? I just need to tap on it to get it unstuck.

A: The starter on your car is located and hidden under the top part of the engine, in the very center. They saved space by locating the starter inside the engine itself. It may just be a stuck solenoid but due to the location of the starter on the V8 (below the intake manifold, inside the "V" of the engine block with the bolts coming from the transmission side) this is what makes it a bit of a PITA. It is not a quick job. You may also need intake, intake plenum, throttle body and egr gaskets along with coolant to finish the repair. A detailed write-up can be found here - http://www.lextreme.com/starter.html Hope that helps.

Q: i am trying to change a rear tail light on a 92 Lexus SC400. how do i get the tail light lens off?
i know that entry is through the trunk under the carpet, but i am having trouble locating the right nuts and bolts to loosen. anyone have any pointers?

A: You don't have to take the lens off, the bulbs pop in the holders that are fitted into the sockets inside the trunk.
